MG80!

ABINGDON’S MG Car Club will be staging the largest ever MG event on 16-17 October 2010 to celebrate the factory-formed club’s 80th birthday.

MG80! will start in New Zealand early in the morning and travel westwards around the globe, passing through Kimber House, Abingdon, UK at noon and finishing in Alaska late that evening.

With MG Car Club events now scheduled in New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong, Europe, North America, Canada, Alaska and South America, the celebration will be truly worldwide.

So far, thirty-four of the MG Car Club’s affiliated worldwide centres have confirmed their inclusion. Events range from a race-meeting in Tasmania to a road-run in Argentina.

Indeed, the passion for the MGCC is epitomized by the MG Car Club’s Danish centre, which will be driving a trophy to Abingdon over the weekend to commemorate the event.

The MG80 event will use a geographical timeline on Google Maps. Points on this line will show the progress of events and will be linked to photos and videos uploaded by clubs to well-known media hosting sites, such as YouTube, flickr and Panaramio.

MG Car Club General Manager Julian White said: “MG80 is now gathering real momentum and we’re hoping to welcome over fifty clubs from around the world! It really does emphasise just how worldwide the MG Car Club is and the global affection for the MG marque.

“It’s hugely exciting that on October 16/17, the MG family will come together to celebrate the MG Car Club, I just wish I could attend every event!”

“MG is Abingdon’s most famous export so we’re naturally thrilled to be celebrating the MG Car Club’s 80th birthday in this way.”
